Bed Bugs are hitch hikers. This makes it difficult for anyone to monitor who is bringing in what and where they got it from. Canadian hotels and rooming houses face a greater challenge with Bed Bug Control due to the high turn over ratio of visitors. If you think you may have a Bed Bug issue, take a quick look in these areas throughout the home for signs of activity. Still not sure? Give Toodaloo Pest and Wildlife Control a call at 1-844-TOODALOO to set up an inspection and put your mind at ease.
Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed off the blood of hosts while sleeping. These pests range in size from 1mm (nymphs) to 6mm (adults). Bed bugs are similar in size and shape to an apple seed, and are easily visible to the human eye. They crawl, they do not fly or jump and have six legs. Before feeding, their bodies are flat and become engorged after feeding. They can consume up to 7 times their body weight in one meal. Freshly hatched nymphs look similar to adults but they are colourless and gain their red/brown colouring as they grow. Bed Bugs can live up to 1 year without a blood meal. Female bed bugs, once impregnated, will continue to lay eggs throughout their lifetime. On average, Bed Bugs will lay 1-5 eggs per day. Bed Bug eggs are white and sticky and are about 1mm long.
Usually the first discomfort that people notice are the Bed Bug bites. The bites are usually in a small grouping of 2-4, usually 3, and look quite similar to mosquito bites. They can swell up into large bumps or stay small and red or vary somewhere along those lines. It is said that 60-70% of people do not react to the bites from Bed Bugs, so it makes it challenging if this is the case. Bites causing itching can lead to swelling and inflammation of an area. Some recommendations to reduce the pain and irritation are to apply anti-itch cream that contain hydrocortisone or a calamine lotion.
The next telltale sign that there may be Bed Bug activity would be little black spots on the mattress and box spring. These spots are similar to a pen point mark in the size and colour. Looking in the tufted area around the top and bottoms and in the corners are usually common. In addition to the spotting, you may see old molted skin, or Bed Bugs in the nymph stages as well. Call Toodaloo Pest and Wildlife Control’s Bed Bug Management Team to remedy the situation.
