When managing household infestations, there are a usual list of culprits. Spiders are known to skulk around showers and rodents creep around kitchens but there is something much more sinister going on behind the scenes: silverfish. Whether you catch sight of them or not, the majority of homes across Canada are infested with these slithering pests.
What is so Bad About Silverfish?
It is no secret that silverfish are ugly but in the grand scheme of things, they don’t seem to be much of a threat - but this just isn’t true. Despite their small size, silverfish are some of the most destructive insects around. So, what makes this particular breed of pest so dangerous?
Diet: Instead of sticking to kitchens, silverfish wander all around homes in search of their next meal. In addition to swiping crumbs off of kitchen counters and floors, silverfish are able to survive off of nearly any organic material. This can be anything from cotton, linens and paper, all the way to naturally based adhesives. Bite by bite, small bits and pieces are damaged but even these, little by little, these can mean big damage. Preserve your book collections, albums and leave wallpaper in place by acting quickly at the first sign of silverfish.
Size/Shape/Colour: From egg to adolescent, silverfish are quite small. These size issues combined with a deep, silvery colour make it difficult to spot these bugs at the best of times. The name Silverfish is partly due to this colouring but also because of the way that these pests move. In order to make their way around, these insects slither from side to side. Being extremely fast is another way that silverfish are able to avoid detection over long periods, growing their numbers and taking over your space.
Schedule: These pests are also most active at night, when most Canadians are tucked away in bed. Without seeing this slithery species in action, it is easy to neglect a growing infestation. Such a difference in schedule can also make it difficult to track down those high traffic areas that need to be addressed.
